Nudging to save water and minimise trash

On a vist to US embassy in Mumbai, I noted an amazing nudge.

In the embassy, all paper cups for drinking water are cone shaped which looked unusual from the moment you saw it. And this is common across most consulate offices in Mumbai.

I kind of guessed why such unusual shape but still asked. The answer was such shape helps in two ways:

  • People usually keep tumbler shaped water cups here and there and not necessarily in the bin. This leads to litter all around. As one can’t keep such cone-shaped cups anywhere one has no choice but trash them right after drinking water.
  • People also  take more water in tumbler shaped cups which does spill to other places . As one can’t carry any cups for keeping anywhere, less water is wasted as well.
Superb nudging.

  1. Indian Economy Says:

Hope in India’s future growth is founded on the demographic dividend: a rapidly expanding young population will save more and inject entrepreneurial vigor that will lift the country to a faster growth trajectory.
