Finally Rupee Symbol released

Ministry of Information and Broadcasting released the symbol for Rupee. It will look like this:

Out of the five entries shortlisted, the one by D. Udaya Kumar (of IIT-Mumbai’s Industrial Design dept) was finally selected. He explains his design:

Speaking to rediff.com on Thursday, a proud D Udaya Kumar said: “My design is based on the Tricolour, with two lines at the top and white space in between. I wanted the symbol for the Rupee to represent the Indian flag. It is a perfect blend of Indian and Roman letters: a capital ‘R’, and Devanagari ‘ra’, which represent rupiya, to appeal to international and Indian audiences.”

“I worked on it for few months and made numerous designs. Finally, I shortlisted 8 to 10 designs and then refined them further till I got this one,” he said.

“I got to know of my design having been chosen to represent the rupee from a media report. It is proud moment for me. But I cannot rely on a media report alone as I have yet to get a confirmation from the finance ministry,” he said, keeping his fingers crossed.

“I will be joining the design department at IIT-Guwahati on Friday, and am looking forward to hearing the good news,” he added

Impressive.

Here is how the five shortlisted entries looked:

Though am not sure which one was selected from these as final one is different!

Here is a profile of 5 short-listed candidates.

I must also acknowledge the efforts of all the people (esp Rakesh Kumar Singh) who have sent their comments and  made all of us aware of the developments in the contest. People were not happy with the opaque way in which the contest was conducted. Especially see these:

http://www.imagine18.com/save-indian-rupee-symbol/7699/06/

Quiet a few comments were posted on the previous posts:

Really sad that despite so many comments from these people, none of these were really addressed. Atleast people’s concerns could have been alleviated by giving proper explanation.

Having said all this let us not take anything away from Mr. D. Udaya Kumar. What an achievment! Many congratulations!

I had also made a design that was much better than 3 of these final short-listed entries. I guess, the short-listed entries could have been far better than these. Were other entries so bad or lack of entries was the issue with the competition?

      Hello Amit,

I guess, my purpose has been misunderstood by you and moreover, we are not competing here for the selection anymore. Rather, as it’s evident from other responses that people are not much convinced as they should have been after the results. Satisfaction of expectations from the winning entry is missing somewhere. Indian govt should have been more thorough in both publicity and evaluation for something that will represent India on global platform.
What do you have to say about it?

Two of the unsuccessful candidates have claimed that the selection process to choose the new rupee symbol is full of discrepancies and is flawed. 10. Sudha K Says:

It may be best of the lot for the jury who went through the contesting symbols, but as it presents itself it is run of the mill sort of thing and quite mediocre – not at all brilliant of sort. The symbol doesn’t give the Indian feel – it looks rather foreign. In the first place the competition was not given wide publicity through different media, hence only about three thousand entries were received. Udaykumar’s claim that it represents tricolour in someway seem far fetched and not convincing.

  11. ra Says:

    http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/quickiearticleshow/6191753.cms

However, in June, a meeting of the Union Cabinet, which was supposed to decide on the symbol, didn’t take up the issue because the finance minister said he needed more time. The search for a new symbol for the rupee had started in February 2009, when the Union Ministry of Finance kicked off a competition for the design of the symbol — although not without controversy.

Non-resident Indians protested because they were not allowed to participate. Others grumbled at the US$10 entry fee. Some objected to the identifying photograph that had to accompany all entries because it intruded on participants’ privacy. And there were complaints when the five winning entries were shortlisted by a panel of experts. The government remained silent on these matters. There was uncertainty about the number of entries received, with estimates ranging from 3,500 to 25,000.

The man who designed the award winning insignia for the rupees actually hails from a family attached to the DMK, a party actually known for its pro-Tamil tilt or anti-Hindi agitation in the 60s and 70s.
Mr D Udaya kumar, presently working as assistant professor in IIT-Guwahati, and who came up with the design is the son of Mr N Dharmalingam, a former DMK MLA, who is a native of Marur in Villupuram district in North Tamil Nadu.
The family presently stays in Thondiarpet in North Chennai where Udaya Kumar grew up. Kumar had earlier passed out of Chennai’s Anna University with a top rank in architecture and has always been known for his bent on art.
The insignia he designed is a combination of Devanagiri script and Roman letter “R” combining both Rupee and rupiya as pronounced in present Hindi………………………..

    Many praises to RTI activists.
    Corruption is very clear.
The symbol is also not imaginative. It does not say anything about India.
All the five contestants are from influential background having contacts with ministry in some way.

  17. Anil K Says:

Unfortunately India is not going to get a rupee symbol it really deserved. The symbol that has been accepted by the Government is not very appealing and seems very ordinary and in no way comes out as very outstanding.

In fact, I too had sent entries for the contest, but at hindsight find them not up to the mark.
The very contest was not very imaginatively conceived and got bogged down in constricted bureaucratic mediocrity. Hence, it failed to evoke much needed fierce and vigorous response from the talent across the country. The contest should not have been directed towards selecting one rigid symbol developed by one individual but towards evolving one with further modifications suggested to the finally short listed ones with maximum participation from the talented and the professionals all over India. The focus should not have been on somebody getting a prize, however, those constructively participated could have been adequately rewarded.

Certain conditions set with respect to the technicalities of the design should have gone as guidelines only, leaving scope for flexibility and pre-final modifications if need be.

Mysteriously, even the otherwise hyper active media virtually slept through this entire exercise of national significance, its critical faculties given a go.

Now of course it is too late. Nevertheless, let me just produce a symbol just as an academic exercise (I could not upload the image – try this url):

    dear all Indian brothren!
Mr Udhaya deserves lot of appreciation and applaud. congrats! but from my individual point of view, the symbol of Indian rupee is an amalgamation of two letters of Devnagri “Ra” and Tanilipi “Sa”. you know for rupees we used to write Rs. So Devnagari “Ra” plus Tanilipi “Sa” is equal to Rs. or rupees. So consciously or unconsciously, this symbol is amalgamation of Tanilipi “Sa” and Devnagri “Ra” and tanilipi script has been in the net since last 11 years.
