History of Chettiar banking, apprenticeship, food and ethics of business..

January 8, 2018

Superb interview on livehistoryindia.com, which is becoming one of my favorite places on web.

It has interviews of Mr MV Subbiah (Muruguppa group), Prof Raman Mahadevan (Chettiar historian) and Ms Meenakshi Meyappan who bring amazing insights.

In particular, Mr Subbiah’s mention of the apprenticeship program at the group is quite something. How entrepreneurship was nurtured at a very young age taking one through basics of business right from the very start. At each stage the salary was paid but as one lived with familty there were no expenses. Thus salary was accumulated into one’s account which was then used later as a start-up capital when one was ready to venture on his own. Brilliant.

All these histories on Indian businesses and practices makes you wonder: how did we lose all this?
